How to make Stories and Highlight covers
Turn any post into a tall 9:16 Instagram Story, and make a matching set of round Highlight covers for your profile.
Before you start
- Pro or Studio, or the Stories & Highlights Kit add-on if you bought HueInk once. Without it, the page shows what it includes. On the Free plan you can try it with the 7-day Pro trial (see How to start your 7-day Pro trial).
- At least one post for Stories. Highlight covers don't need a post.
Make a Story from a post
- Open Stories & Highlights (hueink.com/app/stories), or click Make a Story in the editor.
- Under Choose a post, tap the post you want.
- Under Pick a Story design, look at the three designs:
- Text above the drawing
- Drawing above the text
- Room for a link sticker: leaves an empty space for Instagram's link sticker. You can write a short note above it (for example "Tap the link"), or clear the box for no note.
- Click Download PNG under the design you like, or Download all 3 (ZIP).
- In Instagram, add a new Story and choose the image. For the link design, add the link sticker in the empty space.
Tip: Leave Show where Instagram's buttons go on. The shaded strips show where Instagram puts your name (top) and the reply bar (bottom). The strips and the "Link sticker" box are only a guide. They are not in the image you download.
Make Highlight covers
- Open Stories & Highlights and click Highlight covers.
- Choose what goes on the covers:
- Drawings: tap 4 to 12 drawings from the library, in the order you want them. The number on each one shows its place.
- Words: type 4 to 12 short words separated by commas, for example "Quotes, Love, Work, Tips".
- Under Look, choose a White or Black background, and turn on Hand-drawn ring if you want a circle around each drawing.
- Check the round previews. They show how the covers will look on your profile.
- Click Download covers (ZIP).
- In Instagram, open a Highlight, tap Edit Highlight → Edit cover, and choose the matching image.
What to expect
- Stories are 1080 × 1920 PNG images in the same hand-lettered style as your post, with your signature at the bottom.
- Highlight covers are 1080 × 1920 PNG images with the drawing or word in the middle, inside the circle Instagram shows. They come in one ZIP file, numbered in your order.
- Everything is made on your device, so it's quick and doesn't use your daily limits.
If something goes wrong
- The page says "Part of the Stories & Highlights Kit" — your account doesn't have the add-on yet. If you bought it, sign in with the email from your receipt.
- The page says "… come with Pro" — your plan is Free or Creator. Click Start 7-day Pro trial (Free accounts, once) or See plans.
- The download button is greyed out — wait until the preview has finished drawing. For Highlight covers, pick at least 4 and at most 12.
- "Make a post first" — Stories are made from a post. Create one, then come back.
- The drawing is cut off in the Highlight circle — in Instagram, pinch to zoom the cover out a little when you choose it.
